The Eva Rea Legacy Fund Student Bursary

Holy Trinity Thornhill

Many years ago, the estate of an active parishioner Eva Rea was used to establish the Eva Rea Legacy Fund (ERLF) that includes assisting students with their post-secondary education. It is available to students who are:

  • a member or parishioner of Holy Trinity Church (HTC), Thornhill; or
  • a child, sibling or grandchild of a parishioner; or
  • a graduating student from Holy Trinity School or a designated Thornhill high schools who has been recommended by their guidance counsellor or principal; or
  • a HTC member, parishioner or eligible relative who is continuing at a post-secondary educational institution after their first year.

To qualify, the student must be applying to a post-secondary institution such as a college or university and have identified a need for assistance in pursuing their higher education.

To be considered, the student must disclose his/her plans of study, proof of acceptance to the educational institution of choice, and an interest in, and having contributed to, the community at large and/or to the local school community.

Please read the Terms and Conditions for the application:

a. The value of the bursary is dependent on the funds available in that year. Only one bursary per student will be granted each year. Applicants who are HTC members, parishioners or eligible relatives may receive a maximum of five bursaries in total.

b. Bursary cheques will be issued payable directly to the educational institution prior to the school year and a tax receipt issued to the student according to the income tax deadline.

c. This bursary is to cover a portion of education costs. Should you decide to leave your course of study mid-year, or drop a course, you may be asked to repay an appropriate portion of your bursary. If your educational institute decides to offer a partial tuition refund, you may be asked for a partial refund of your bursary. Should these conditions occur, the amount shall be decided by the ERLF Committee.

d. You may apply if you are enrolled part-time or full-time. The amount of the bursary will be adjusted appropriately for part-time studies. Part-time is defined as a 50% course load or less. This information should be fully disclosed on the application form.

e. Applications will be weighted more heavily for those who are deemed likely to need financial aid because of their course of study or special need. It is therefore vital that your application describes the reasons why you need the aid so that your financial circumstances can be assessed. We ask, however, that you do not disclose the amount of your income. The financial circumstances you describe must be relevant to the source of your educational funding. For example, if your parents or another party are paying your educational expenses, it is their situation that you must describe on the application form.

f. All applications must be fully completed and submitted by the application close date.

g. All decisions will be made by the ERLF Committee and announced as soon as possible. All applicants will receive a letter confirming the outcome of their application.
